Prepare your child for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.

Phonics Test UK helps prepare your child for the new Year 1 Phonics Screening Check with realistic practice tests. Designed by a specialist literacy teacher, our easy-to-use App replicates the Official Check using ALL featured letters and sounds and every word structure, with over 4000 carefully selected words.

It is important to know that the Governments Phonics Screening Check does NOT aim to assess childrens understanding. It only checks your childs ability to read by putting together the sounds that make up words. This is done using a mixture of non-words (e.g. ulf, quemp, fape) and unfamiliar real words (e.g. phone, scribe, starling).

Only a third of children passed the Governments pilot. Our practice tests build confidence to apply the phonics skills, already taught in Reception and Year 1, to read aloud unfamiliar words. They also familiarise your child with the tricky concept of non-words and the way they will be presented in the Official Check.

INCLUDES:
In line with the requirements specified by the Standards and Testing Agency (Department for Education), each practice test contains 40 words divided into two sections.
Section One: Contains 12 non-words and 8 real words that have simple word structures using single letters (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q(u),r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z), consonant digraphs (ch, ck, ff, ll, ng, sh, ss, th, zz) and vowel digraphs (ar, ee, oi, oo, or).
Section Two: Contains 8 non-words and 12 real words (including two-syllable words up to 8 letters) that have more complex word structures and use additional consonant digraphs (ph, wh), vowel digraphs (a-e, ai, au, aw, ay, ea, e-e, er, ew, i-e, ie, ir, oa, o-e, ou, ow, oy, ue, u-e, ur) and trigraphs (air, igh).
